Does the Mayor perform marriage ceremonies, and how much does it cost?

Mayor Buckman is allowed to perform marriage ceremonies within Hamilton County; however, because of the large number of requests, he will do such ceremonies for Blue Ash residents only. As long as a day, time, and location can be set to satisfy everyone’s schedule, Mayor Buckman is very pleased to assist residents with this occasion. Our Mayor does not have regular office hours and does have a job separate from his Mayor’s position, so schedules must be checked and “matched.” Though there is no fee to Mayor Buckman for these services, he does respectfully request that a donation be made to the Blue Ash based Hospice organization (in the name of those being married … not in his name). He also will gladly accept such a check made payable to Hospice and will deliver it to Hospice. Call the City Manager’s office at (513) 745-8510 or E-mail administration@blueash.com to make a request.

How did Blue Ash get its name?

The first building in Blue Ash, Carpenter’s Run Baptist Church, once located near where the Plainfield and Cooper Roads intersection is today, was constructed from the logs of Blue Ash trees. Blue Ash trees were also useful to the early settlers because a blue dye could be extracted from the bark.

There is a house in the neighborhood that is not well-maintained and is making the rest of us look bad … what can I do about it?

Call the Community Development Office at 745-8520, or E-mail information to rdole@blueash.com . Though you do not have to provide your name, please make sure you provide the street address of the problem property. There are rules and regulations related to property maintenance, and these are meant to protect property values for all of Blue Ash. Just one example of a property maintenance regulation is that lawn grass must not be more than eight inches high. The Community Development office enforces such rules.

When is the next Council meeting?

Council meetings are posted upon the City’s calendar of events at the BlueAsh.com website. Generally, Council meetings are held at 7PM on the second and fourth Thursdays in January through May, September, and October; the second Thursday only in June through August and December; and the second and third Thursday in November. Since variations to this schedule do occur, we encourage anyone interested in attending a Council meeting to call (513) 745-8510 close to the date to assure no changes have occurred. Agendas are generally posted to the website the Friday before a meeting.

I want to talk to my Council person … who is he/she and how do I do that?

Call the City Manager’s Office at (513) 745-8510 to find out which Council persons represent you. This is generally the fastest way to reach your Council person as well, since with our Council-Manager form of government, Council does not have regular office hours. You can also E-mail a request or question to administration@blueash.com . You can also look at the Ward Map included within this website to determine in which ward you live and then match that ward up with the Council representative also listed on the site. Consider that each Blue Ash voter gets the opportunity to vote for three Blue Ash Council representatives: the one ward representative of your neighborhood/area and the two “at large” representatives.

I’m opening a business in Blue Ash … do I need a license from Blue Ash?

The City of Blue Ash does not issue business licenses. However, keep in mind that if you are planning to build or renovate an existing space, you will need to work with our Community Development Office at (513) 745-8520 to assure the necessary permits are acquired and the zoning is correct. Also, you will want to talk with our Tax Office at (513) 745-8516 to make sure you’re familiar with the tax reporting requirements for your business and its employees. We also recommend you investigate whether or not Hamilton County and/or the State of Ohio have specific licensing or reporting procedures for the business you intend to operate.

There’s a street light out in my neighborhood … who do I call?

Some of the street lights in Blue Ash are maintained by the City, some by Duke Energy, and some by individual homeowner’s associations (HOA). You can call Blue Ash at (513) 745-8512 or E-mail us at administration@blueash.com to report a problem light. Make sure you leave a good description as to where the light is located – the closest street address is the best. The City will know whose responsibility the light is and, if the light is not maintained by Blue Ash, contact Duke or the HOA.

          Who was Reed Hartman?

Reed Hartman Highway is named for J. Reed Hartman, First VP, General Manager of the CIC, and Vice President of Cincinnati Gas & Electric. Mr. Hartman was very active in civic progress in the 1950s and early 60s, and was instrumental in formulating the connector between I-275 and then Cross County Highway. The CIC (Community Improvement Corporation) was founded by a group of business leaders in the early 1960s to develop Cincinnati-owned land in Blue Ash as an industrial park. The CIC was probably the most important contributing factor to the development of commerce and industry in Blue Ash. Mr. Hartman passed away in March 1969, and the entire Reed Hartman Highway was completed in July 1979.

Can I get an extra Blue Ash Calendar?

YES … that is, if at the time of the request we still have extras on hand. Typically, calendars are mailed to all residences and businesses in Blue Ash in December, and extras are on hand to accommodate, for example, requests for extras, as well as for general promotional purposes. Since they are somewhat costly to mail, we do ask that extra calendars be picked up if at all possible. Call (513) 745-8510 or E-mail administration@blueash.com to request your copy.

However, whenever asked this "population" question, we also like to provide a City estimate of our “daytime” population, which would factor in those who work in Blue Ash, etc. That estimated “daytime” population in 2007 is 55,000. Also, we have an estimated 2,000 businesses in Blue Ash.

Can I still order an inscribed brick for placement at the Veterans Memorial? How much are they?

YES. Brick orders are taken continually; however, bricks are inscribed only once per year – by Memorial Day. Generally, brick orders are accepted up till the first Friday in April, and orders received after that will be placed by Memorial Day of the following year. Inscribed brick costs remain at $25 each, and you, or the person being honored on the brick, do not need to be a Blue Ash resident.

What information do you need for the brick order?

There are three lines of inscription on each brick, and each line has a maximum of 14 characters (including spaces, punctuation, etc.). Line 1 consists of the veterans name. Line 2 consists of the branch of services. Line 3 are the years of service. You don’t need to know the exact date or even the exact month – just the beginning and ending years. If you don’t know the ending year yet, you can leave that blank. However, future inscription to “fill in” that year cannot be done.

Does Blue Ash still offer the residential tree program?

YES. The intention for the program is to allow planting of up to two trees per residence in a publicly visible location. If you have purchased trees through the program in a recent year (since about 2001), you would not be eligible to receive another coupon. If you planted only one tree, or if you “ordered” a coupon but did not redeem it, you would be eligible to participate this year. The program offers Blue Ash homeowners a discount coupon towards the cost of trees purchased for planting in your front or side yards – the tree must be planted in a place which is visible by the public (not just your residence). The coupon allows each residence a discount of 50% off the cost of each tree, including planting, up to a maximum discount of $150 per tree. Residents much purchase trees from participating nurseries, and the nursery must do the planting. Make sure you get your coupon before going to the nursery as the discount is applied at the time of purchase. To order your coupon, call the Reception desk at 745-8500, Ext. 0, during regular office hours.
